Here's the list of all Johnsons in the 1850 census for Washington County Florida, split into households. David Johnson 40 Moholy Johnson 24 Elizabeth Johnson 18 Flephin Johnson 17 David Johnson 13 Wiley Johnson 15 Syetteton Johnson 7 Marthy Johnson 5 William Johnson 3 Thomas Johnson 2 Greenbury Johnson 80 William Johnson   23 Elvina Johnson     15 Mary Johnson      63 Darling Johnson  18 Daniel Johnson 45 Mary Johnson and Greenbury are the patriarchal couple.  I'm not sure if Darling and William are sons or Grandsons, but conjecture that David and Daniel are sons.   Look at the 1840 census data for Greenbury back in Georgia: We have 4 m  5-10  (Darling, Wiley, David, and "Flephin")? 2 m 10-15  William?  Another son who married? 1 m 20-30   David? 1 m 30-40   Daniel? 1 m 60-70 Greenbury 2 f 0-5  ?? 2 f 5-10  Elizabeth...

1810 Gaspards of Avoyelles

1810 Daniel Gaspard and Baptiste Gaspard are next to each other Daniel Gaspard Household 1 m <10 1 m 10-15 1 m 16-25 1 m 45+ 1 f <10 1 f 26-44 Baptiste Gaspard Household 1 m 26-44 2 f <10 1 f 26-44 How do these match up with the "standard undocumented genealogy" from ancestry.com? We have the following targets: (a) Daniel Gaspard  I    1746-1818 (b) Daniel Gaspard II    1775-1825 (c) Jean Baptiste I   1776-1843  (d) Jean Baptiste II   ? - 1880  (b) and (c) are sons of (a), and (d) is son of (c) Census Daniel could be (a), but then what are the ramifications? Census Baptiste matches (c) nicely on age.  The reported family dates on the Ancestry "historical family search" don't match very well in either situation. Owen, Frederick, Anthony, and Sterling Arnold 1

Here's some circumstantial evidence that Frederick, Anthony, Sterling, and Owen are all connected: 1) Family Names (a) Frederick's Family: Son Owen T. Arnold born circa 1843, and a grandson named Joseph Sterlin Arnold (by way of son Fred) [He appears as Joe Arnold many places, but his death certificate gives him middle name "sterlin".] (b) Sterling's Family: Sterling has a son named Owen N. Arnold born in 1867. (c) Anthony's Family: Anthony's son Dempsey had a son named Sterling E. Arnold (17 years old in 1900 Census).  Dempsey also has a son born in 1879 named Dempsey O. Arnold (see 1880 census).  It looks like Dempsey O. died young, as he's not on the 1900 census, and instead the older Dempsey has another son born in 1890 named "Dempsey R." NB:  There is another Dempsey Arnold floating around on the 1880 census. This one is 20, and attached to a widowed "Cynthy arnold" who is 63.  I will follow up to see if I can c...

1790 - 1820 Arnolds in Brunswick County

Most of the family trees we stumble across on Ancestry.com and familysearch.org that list a father for Sterling Arnold assign the name Owen Arnold.  I'm going to lay out what the early censuses have to say about Arnolds in Brunswick County 1790 Census has Elinor Arnold listed, with household  1 M 0-16  3 F   no info ages given 1800  Census has Owen Arnal listed, with household: 1 M 26-44 1 F   0 - 10 1 F  26-44 1810 Census has O. Arnold, with household: 1 M   0-10 1 M   45+ 1 F    0-10 1 F   10-15 1 F    45+ No Arnolds appear on 1820 Census for Brunswick County Owen Arnold is commonly listed as Sterling's father on user-generated family trees on both Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org We do have a marriage bond for a marriage between Owen Arnold and Mary Hewett, dated 24 July, 1823. I'll start by reminding myself that I need to look at the neighbors of the Arnolds and see how the Hewitts are connected. There are many more Arnolds in Brunswick County in 1850, so I'm just going to list the households, and try to make sense out of them later. Arnold - 1830 Census: Sterling's Mother?

Backing up 10 years to 1830, we find two Arnold households:  Polly Arnold and Mathias Arnold Polly is a nickname for Mary, so she's really "Mary Arnold".  Also, they are living next to each other, as they appear on consecutive lines of the census. Polly's Household contains the following: 1 M  5-10 2 M  10-15 1 F    15-20 1 F    40-50 Mathias's Household contains 1 M 20-30 1 F   0-5 1 F  20-30 Polly (Mary) is probably Sterling's mom, based on comparing the 1830 and 1840 censuses.  In 1840, the three males would be 15-20  (Sterling?), 20-25 x 2 (both out of house?), while the females would be 25-30 and 50-60 (which both match people in Sterling's household of 1840).
